  16. The first thing I did when I got the Sportster 33.6k was AT&F1&W0.  I use 
  17. ATZ as an init string for all my telecom programs.  I override the 
  18. Windows 95 init string by placing a "Z" in the Extra settings box in 
  19. Modems Properties.  I also tried disabling compression with &K0 and force 
  20. MNP by disabling v.42 negotiation sequence with the appropriate S 
  21. register (it's a different S register on the 33.6k Sportster but 
  22. equivalent to doing S27=32 on the old 28.8k Sportster).

  29. Believe me, I've read the manual.  As a matter of fact, I've read the 
  30. manuals to several USR modems I've bought or support for other people 
  31. including HST 9600, HST 14.4k, Dual Standard 14.4k HST/v.32bis, Sportster 
  32. 28.8k, v.Everything, etc.  A user shouldn't have to do more than issue 
  33. the recomended AT&F1 init string.  If he has to muck around with the 
  34. other settings, limit the symbol rate and such, then the product is 
  35. broken.  This is exactly what I had to do with my roommate's Sportster 
  36. 28.8k.  It would sometimes produce a continuous hi-lo tone when trying to 
  37. connect with other modems, unless I limit the connect speed to no higher 
  38. than 26.4k.  This is after going through a few firmware upgrades to fix 
  39. other problems.

  47. USR hasn't changed much since I bought their HST 9600 years ago.  They go 
  48. in a cycle, release new product, let customers beta test, when customers 
  49. complain, release firmware updates, continue with firmware updates until 
  50. product works reasonably well, then back to releasing new product.  I got 
  51. tired of paying a premium just to beta test their stuff.
